LFS Dance

Support can be beautiful. AND oh so fun! Take for instance the annual Dancing for a Brand New Me competition benefit put on by Lassen Family Services. LoCaLs putting it all their dance skills out there for everyone to see…and JUDGE. Yikes. These are some brave folks that do it all for all good cause.


LFS Fiscal Director Kerri Cobb told me what it is all about~
"Lassen Family Services Inc is hosting our annual Dancing for a Brand New Me Fundraising Outreach Event Oct 19th and 20th! We are so excited to have so many amazing volunteers from our Community as our Professional and Star Dancers all working hard and practicing to bring you an amazing show! It’s all to benefit Lassen Family Services, our many service programs, bring awareness to the community and and resources to Domestic Violence Victims."


"When I came to work at Lassen Family Services I thought that I knew what they did here, but it is so much more than I imagined. This event is part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and not only does it provide funds for us to empower our participants but it brings awareness to Domestic Violence and the impact it has on individuals and families in our community. Here is just part of what we at Lassen Family Services offers:

24 hour crisis line and on call Crisis Intervention trained Peer Counselors to help victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault in our Community.
A staffed Shelter as well as a clothing closet and food pantry for our participants.
Parenting classes.
We partner with many County service agencies to give people resources to PHASE into empowerment.
Child Abuse Treatment Program and Court Appointed Special Advocates to round out our services to help families become whole. Lassen Family Services is the only service agency of our kind in Lassen County, we are looking forward to an exciting and powerful event. Jim Uruburu

Before I get down to business I have to tell you a cute story. Ruthie Vache RAN the bakery here for many, many moons before retiring. We miss her still, that bright red hair, that laugh. Irreplaceable. So she was back in town visiting her son, Susan River Fire Chief Jim Uruburu on her 70th birthday. Can you believe our Ruthie is 70? A lovely little party hosted by Jim, his lovely wife Jenni and Ruthie’s daughter Leslie Whipple, well, they had an actual BURN PERMIT for the candles on her cake! Too much! It was a blast, always a pleasure to be with old friends and their families.

                          
Now down to business. Did you know our Lassen County Public Health Department has a Emergency Preparedness Team consisting of Jim Uruburu, Maryann Kiar, Alice Robinson and so many other of the good people at our LoCaL health department!? They do! AND they are all about Get Ready- Stay Ready. In an emergency situation the team would work with OES and ALL of our public entities would come together as volunteers to pull off needed shelters and such. As Jim pointed out it used to be that neighbors helped neighbors, we were much more self sufficient. I think we’ve lost touch a little bit with the basics that could be necessary in an emergency like;

Water
Food
First aid kit
Evacuation plan
Pet emergency supplies
Is your car ready if you became stranded? Where do you keep your important documents? There is so much I realize I’m not prepared for! Public Health has these terrific pamphlets with tons of great information and they’ll be available right here at the market on October 15th when Jeremy Germ will be here giving Flu Shots from 1:30-4:30! Jim Uruburu will be here to talk about preparedness and to answer any questions!

Lassen County RoCkS

We live in an area where 4 distinct geological features converge; the Cascade range, the Sierra/Diamond range, volcanoes and desert. This creates a perfect storm for Rockhounds. Susanville Rockhound founder Rollie Emerson tells me. He also says as a Rockhound if he could live anywhere in the world he would choose here. Wow. That’s pretty cool.


I don’t know anything about rocks but found some really pretty rose quartz and a few little crystals, I brought them to work to show Toni Iba (in our Bakery) then I began to find out what we have right here! She brought in a few of her finds from our area:

• Amethyst, Red Rock/Hallelujah Junction area

Her finds are all so beautiful and what a fun thing to do! Growing up near the Geysers in Santa Rosa she fell in love with rockhounding and that continues today. Toni told me all of her really cool finds (like that gem quality amethyst pictured) she was with Rollie and he told her where to look. Some people just have a talent for it. Rollie said finding what YOU like is all that matters and Toni said “Even a diamond is just a rock until someone recognizes it’s beauty and polishes it up”

Sheriff's Posse

It never ceases to amaze me what I can learn in just a short conversation right here at the market. Take for instance the Sheriff Posse's recent shopping trip. Here’s just a few things I was told by Captain Jim Panos and Danny Lindsey:

                               

                              

In 1941-42 the Posse was tasked with watching for invading Japanese with plans Herlong had for both Japanese and American plans.
They were originally established to aid the Sheriff in search and rescue.
Annual St Jude ride has earned over $81,000 in donations which Captain Panos attributes to the huge support they have here.
Support Ag scholarships. One is a veterinary school scholarship in honor of Doc Tangeman, a 40 year member.
Work with our community and Chamber of Commerce at Christmas, Halloween or whatever Chamber Executive Director Patti Hagata asks them to help with :)
They still believe in doing everything LOCAL. Boy, do we appreciate this.
Every year the Posse heads out for their Papoose Meadows Ride Out, where they ride, shoot trap, play horseshoes and such. This year about 45 people will participate.

Sherry Perry has left the building.. .

Sherry Perry has retired. I can’t even believe it. That woman has been an institution in Susanville, serving our community for over 38 years between Walker’s Cafe and Susanville Market. She and her husband Wayne moved here from Pacifica feeling this was a better place to raise their 3 sons. They all grew up to be wonderful successful men so Sherry says she made the right decision.

When we moved here in ‘93 we’d frequently go to Walker’s for breakfast, that’s where I first met Sherry. Always sassy and entertaining, Sherry and coworker (and close friend), Lisa Boyear, would tease each other saying things like “I’m the hostess, she’s the Twinkie.” Super fun place with those two. If you were a regular Sherry knew your order and would put it in before you got out of your car. Sherry was at Walker’s for 25 years. 

                                  
               
What a huge amount of camaraderie, friendship and humor Sherry brought to our workplace. We’re gonna miss her but I know she’ll be in to visit and it’s time for her to just put her feet up! We feel so fortunate that Sherry chose to spend the last 13 years of her career here at Susanville Super.

Thompson Peak Lookout

Thompson Peak has got to be one of the most beautiful, iconic sights in Lassen County. If you’ve never been to the top, right now is a great time to go. We went up in August and were heartily greeted by Lookout Richard Walters who invited us to bring our family the next day. He let us use the catwalk all the way round, take photos and entertained us all with so many stories!


When I told Richard I wanted to share about our visit and encourage others to make the trip he said he wanted to be sure to tell you all thank you. Evidently several years ago the catwalk was pulling away and such a danger to use that Richard would hang onto anything he could to make it around. The next year the lookout was closed. On Richard’s annual trek through to Oregon he stopped at Artisan Coffee and was visiting. When coffee shop owner, Austin Minert, found out the Lookout was closed he asked what could be done. Richard told him to find someone that would do the needed repairs pro bono. Austin did just that and more. Our LoCaL communities all banded together (along with Forestry donations!) and raised the necessary funds for materials and completed the necessary work. Richard named off all the towns that helped and though I can’t remember them all, just know, Richard won’t forget. The very next season it was reopened!
                     


The Thompson Peak Lookout is much more important than I even could imagine. Richard and another lookout spotted the first Clearlake fire this year and triangulated the location. That’s a long way from home. I for one rest a little easier knowing our lookouts are manned and keeping vigilant watch over our land.

FrEsH Baked Artisan Breads....mmmmmmm

When I was a kid my mom baked bread from scratch. I’ll never forget the first slice FrEsH from the oven, butter melting on contact. Today this is becoming a lost art. Even in bakeries much of what you find is mass produced, what we call ‘bake-off’, meaning it comes in ready to bake. We make our own breads every day, deli sandwich, french, sliced varieties and rolls. Our Bakers, Richard, Carson and Jeff have been experimenting with true artisan bread recipes too but the best way to learn is always from another Baker.

                          
Santos Buenrostro is a Technical Sales Rep for bakery supplier BakeMark. A second generation Baker, Santos was making French Bread in his parents bakery by the time he was 12 years old. He spent 3 months at the San Francisco Culinary Academy and has traveled all over the world being trained and training others plus he works in BakeMark’s lab developing recipes. Quite a resume, right? When he set up a date to come here Santos was greeted with great enthusiasm from both the bakers and the more than willing taste testers! He shared so many fantastic recipes and techniques including Hard Crust Sour, Baquettes, Ancient Grains, Soaked Grains, Apricot Cranberry, Cream Cheese Jalapeño and his Pan De Leche rolls are sweet perfection!
                                        

With your support this will only continue to grow as Santos shares more and more of his recipes! I cannot wait for you to try all of them, I just know you’re gonna be as excited as I am when you do taste our NEW wonderful scratch baked artisan breads! Because you know, here at Susanville Super we’re ALL ABOUT FRESH! My Momma would be so proud :)

SuMmEr Yummies!!

You know those people that see something on Pinterest and do their version and post “nailed it!” not in the sarcastic, I’m a disaster way BUT really do nail it? Well that’s our Kailie. She is one of the most creative, artistic, working, amazing Mom, all around sweet people I know. Kailie has been with us since 2007 and is well known as a fantastic Cake Decorator!


Since Kailie is a working mom with a preschooler she’s always concerned about nutrition on the go. For a quick breakfast she makes overnight oats with FrEsH fruit in small mason jars and her Summer Corn and Blueberry Salad is savory/sweet perfection. These recipes are so delicious I had to ask her to share!
                                     

Overnight Oats
For 4 oz mason jars use 1/3 cup oatmeal, put that in first. Then add whatever fruit and extras that sound yummy. Leave room to pour almond milk, pour milk over once, let settle for a min and then finish topping jar off (about 1/3 cup milk)
The berries are sooooo ripe that I like it with just oatmeal, berries and almond milk. But my other favorites are peaches with brown sugar and cinnamon, and Granny Smith apple, vanilla protein powder and cinnamon.

               
Nutrition add ins... flax, hemp, or chia seeds, protein powder, nuts.


Flavor add ins.... maple syrups, honey, coconut flakes, almond butter, banana, chocolate chips, pumpkin purée, cinnamon, brown sugar, yogurt, fruit purée.


You can use almond, coconut, soy or dairy milk !


Corn Blueberry Salad
2 ears white corn
1 small pack blueberries or 1 1/2 cup
1 jalapeño
1/2 cucumber
1/2 a Red onion
Cilantro
1 lime
2 tblsp honey
2 tsp cumin
Salt and pepper


Boil corn and cut off cob, rinse blueberries, seed and chop jalapeño, peel and slice cucumber, chop onion, roughly chop a large handful of cilantro. Put lime juice, honey, cumin, salt and pepper in a screw top jar till combined and pour over salad.
                                  

Glass canning jars are a great way to store and transport single servings! If we don’t have the size jar you want just let us know and we’ll order it.
